Kid's RealmA variety of quick, easy to learn skills appropriate for kids and teens. FREE for KIDS. No need to sign up, just show up! In the Ravenna Eckstein community center gym. Skills include sewing, making savory pancakes, handling hand tools, making Valentines with recycled materials, dipping beeswax candles and more. 10:00am - 12:45pm** 0
Sewing/knitting *A very beginning workshop in which we would make a simple dishcloth.  The materials needed: one skein of cotton worsted weight cotton yarn (Lily Sugar 'n Cream is an example) and one pair of short straight size #10 (6 mm) knitting needles OR one 29 inch or longer size #10 (6 mm) circular knitting needle.  I will provide a set of instructions. Teach: how to read a simple pattern. how to hold the yarn and needles. how to cast on a row of stitches. how to do the knit stitch. how to do the purl stitch. how to cast off a row of stitches. how to weave in the ends. Radio Communications for Non-GeeksA description of the available options for personal and emergency communication. I will cover Family Radio Service (small, non-licensed radios), General Mobile Radio Service (no-test $85 license, better range) and Amateur (aka "Ham") radio. I will help you decide what meets your needs, show you how to get started and let you play with some radio toys. Designed for non-techies who need practical info. Bread Baking I (wheat and gluten-free)We will be making wheat bread, using the Tassajara method of bread baking, (slow method), as well as a gluten-free variety. Plant PropagationCuttings and division are extremely cost effective ways to increase the plant material available for our gardens. When developing an Edible Forest Garden (which we are discussing in the Permaculture Design Guild, and will be offering again in the future), Sourcing plants from readily available stock in the neighborhood is very valuable. Basic Trauma Assessment and SplintingThis workshop will focus on patient head-to toe assessment skills and basic bandaging and splinting. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and be comfortable with being touched, as they will be practicing assessment and stabilization skills on one another. All of the instructors have first aid or EMT backgrounds and volunteer with King County Search and Rescue organizations. Meadowbrook 11:00am - 12:00pm After school Room 1 9 (16 max.)
Crochet with PlarnWe will be making "plarn" plastic bag yarn, and (Skill level and time allowing) starting a waterbottle carrier out of the plarn. Basic Home Plumbing RepairLearn how to replace washers to fix a dripping faucet and make repairs to copper pipe. Find out about hot water re-circulation systems that reduce the wait for hot water and reduce water consumption. Meadowbrook 12:00pm - 1:30pm Room 11 6 (15 max.)
FeltingWe will be using a felting technique called "needle felting" to create simple Valentine's Day heart decorations.  The decorations can be made into ornaments for gifts or hanging in your home, or you can felt them on to a wool scarf, hat, or sweater that you bring with you.  Materials for making the decorations will be provided. Basket Weaving *Learn to weave a small potato basket, a traditional Appalachian basket used to gather potatoes from the field.  We will be using a grapevine hoop and a mix of natural materials to weave this beautiful, practical basket. Meadowbrook 12:30pm - 3:00pm After school Room 1 12 (12 max.)

Yoga - 25 min Home Practicea 25-minute home practice designed to fit your needs and limited time. Also, learn a yoga practice using the support of a chair. Some of us need the support of a chair to allow yoga to be an accessible practice. For others, the chair offers an interesting prop to allow us to do yoga differently. UPSCALING GARMENTSWe will be showing examples of thrift store/hand-me-downs that have become artistic fashion statements, and demonstrating the magic of draping and other techniques to transform garments. If you would like to bring a man’s dress shirt that is at least one or two sizes too big, a tee shirt, or other garment that you want to bless with a new life. We will brainstorm some ideas, and if we have enough time, pin/cut the garment in a way that will work for you. INTRO to DIY solar home hot water system for $1,000Build your own home solar hot water heating system and save on your water heating bills. Session covers the basics of adapting an inexpensive solar hot water heating system to your home, the do-it-yourself skills required, and lessons learned. Build A Solar CookerMake a solar cooker from simple materials and take home an oven! This workshop includes an overview of how solar cooking works, the benefits of solar cooking, different types of cookers, pots and utensils you will need, recipe tips, how to have the best results using your oven in Seattle. Make it Yourself-Herbal Products *Using local, organic ingredients, you will learn to make herbal infusions, diffusions, salves, skin toners, lotions and bath salts. Bring jars and containers to put finished products into. You will leave this workshop with easy-to-follow recipes and several products we make in class. Vinegars and Miels *Bring 2 8oz jars. "Let thy food be thy medicine!", Hippocrates hit the nail on the head. Good health starts with good prevention.  In this workshop, come learn how to make tasty herbally infused honeys and vinegars that are the perfect way to incorporate herbs into your daily food intake. These old time remedies are sure to please the pallet while helping to keep your body functioning at top level to help ward off a number of illnesses.  I will explain the therapeutic properties of the preparations and give a brief demonstration, which you will then practice by making your own honey and vinegar to take home.
